I've only tried this with excel, but when I attach a file to a topic, it does not update by using the refresh button.

There are several options to enrich your maptopics with (parts of) files.
Attachements, Hyperlinks and Excel Linker/Excel Range

Attachments. (the paperclip symbol) The attached file with be stored inside the MMAP. document and can be opened via the clickable link.
There is no refresh option.

With Hyperlinks you just make a link to a document of even a filefolder.
Use the LINK Symbol or use of of the FILE EXPLORER Mapparts.

Since they are only linking, it will automatically link to the latest document or file folder version. No refresh needed ;-)

Excel range or ExcelLinker are the same thing.
Excel range can be found under the advanced tab and excellinker in the mapparts (right side tabs)

They create a kind of gateway into the excelsheet. Changes you make in your map are actually done in Excel.
There is an option to unconnect from excel via the little excel logo in the excel info field.
If you use that, it does not refresh.
If connected you can refresh with F5 or the button in the topic.

I sure appreciate your reply, and everything you stated has always been my understanding.  I believe the issues I am facing have more to do with bugs in the system.  It is impossible for me to use the excel linker & range without it crashing the program.  Also, the HTML export feature does not seem to support URL attachments--it will not open Office 365 files.  Just so you know, there is a refresh button available for both attached and linked files.  It can be a bit misleading to the user if they think they can refresh attached files.

Could you please provide us with some images of what you see and what happens?

I just opened a map with links and attachments and I cannot find the refreshbutton.
Please show me where it is and what it looks like. I am eager to learn ;-)

Aha,,, not in the Map but in the Builtin Browser. Thanks.
That is why I did no find it, I open outside MindManager as a standard.

Now for your problem... I tried and was not succesful either.
The Help suggest it should!

see:
Edit an attached file

You cannot edit an attachment in the built-in Browser.  Instead, open and edit it in the associated application, then refresh the Browser to reflect the edits.

Edit an attached file that is displayed in the Browser:
  • Click the Open Outside MindManager button on the Browser toolbar.

  • Edit and save the document in the native application.

  • Click the Refresh button To update the attached file displayed in the MindManager Browser.

Looks like it is a bug indeed.
I suggest you contact Mindjet Support to help you out with this one.

Ofcourse I would love to hear the outcome.

Yes, i will post any update.  It just seems there are several issues associated with excel.  I can't select excel range without it crashing the program.  The big issues lies with the URL links (online Office 365 files) that don't seem to function when exported to HTML.
