Can't assign the same image to an icon group, even though it's a different file with a different name

I am creating a map marker icon group with icons of country flags and the official ISO3166-1 name and codes as the marker name. In the case of some dependant territories that do not have their own flags, they instead have the same flag as their parent country. I was somewhat surprised when MindManager 15 refused to allow me to add the same flag image to the second instance marker (the country or the dependant territory depending on what comes first alphabetically in English), even though the actual icon file I am trying to add is a different .ico file in my source directoiry and has a different file name. Any suggestions here?

Oh incidentally another thing to point out is that the permitted length of a group name for icon groups is much shorter than for the purely text-based tag groups. Any reason for that?

If you copied and renamed there may be some header/meta information in the ico file which uniquely identifies it. Open ico files in Notepad and have a look.

Hi Angus,

I have had a look at this and I can only assume that MindManager is creating some form of hash code from the color values of each pixel in the image, (or some such method), as I too am unable to add two identical ico files with different file names to the same Marker group.

However....

I did manage to do it by editing a single pixel in one of the images, saving it and then adding it. This works which would seem to confirm some form of process that assigns a unique hash code or id to each icon to ensure that they don't appear twice in the same group.

So it can be done but is a bit fiddly. Incidentally I used SnagIt to perform the change using a fill tool and selecting a close color from an adjacent pixel so the change is not noticeable to the eye.

Hope this helps.

If you need someone to re-jig the ico files then I can do it if you send me a copy of each of the flags and tell me how many copies of each you require. Alternatively you can grab a copy of SnagIt (free for 30 days) and have a go yourself.

Regards
Nigel

Thanks Nigel. Yes indeed MM never fails to confound in some new and unexpected way! Thanks for the suggestion, it seems to have nailed the problem. As it happens I did purchase Snag-it last year to do my product videos but didn’t realise I could edit .ico files with it. I have always been a PaintShopPro user so it will take a while to learn of all its capabilities. Managed to muddle through by just erasing the colour from a single pixel in each file that wouldn’t load in MM.

Decided to use the 32x32 icon files. You only see the difference when you are zoomed in to the maximum 400% so I thought I would save on some file size overhead.

Anyway thanks again. I will send you a copy of my final map with the flag icon  marker group once I have finished the updating the map.

Best regards

Angus

Hi Alex  (nice work Nigel)

I think the larger icon size is for printing.  I would retain it.

I use http://greenfishsoftware.blogspot.hu/2012/07/greenfish-icon-editor-pro.html . Its a free icon editor.

Cheers, Andrew

Thanks for the suggestion on the icon editor. My antivirus is blocking the download and running the exe file but I will persist tomorrow and give it a go. However have had very bad experiences downloading free video software before finally deciding it was worth the money to avoid the hassle and get snagit so I will persist with that as well.

Thanks for your time and expertise.
