Concept Maps very limited

The Concpept Map function of MM17 is very limited and frustrating to use. For example, adding several relationships to a connecting verb just does not work. While I can make sub-topics from the connector label node, I cannot get the connector to actually show up as multiple connectors to a single node. I tried adding a topic (with shape) but that does not result in multiple connectors coming from a single node point.

Related to this is the fact that there has not been any improvements in easily snapping connectors into neat arrangements. In short the whole process is not a pleasant experience and I wonder if the addition of Concept Maps and Flow Charts are worth the effort. The lack of real functional development of these features seen to indicate flaws in the underlying mechanics of the program.

In researching Concept Maps I came across a wonderful White Paper by Nick Duffill. Within that document is a map demonstrating what should be possible with Concept Maps. He also had a working add-in that appears to be far superior to the current offering. I wonder why Mindjet did not consult with Nick who is a genuinely nice guy and talented programmer. It might have been quicker, easier and more satisfying to users if you had of simply bought Nick's add-in. Instead you broke it!!!!!

Thank you for your kind words. The way that MindManager 2016 implemented concept maps is fundamentally different to the Network Builder add-in. In MindManager 2016, the linking text or verb is a callout topic on the relationship that forms the proposition. In Network Builder, the linking text is a independent floating topic, and the proposition is formed from a floating topic and two relationships, not one. While this is a bit more complicated, it does provide better dynamic control over the layout, and multiple relationships to linking texts can be used so that one-to-many or many-to-one propositions can be clearly shown. This is an important part of the thinking and refactoring processes in concept mapping. However there did not seem to be a simple way to adapt Network Builder to work with maps that are also compatible with the MM2016 model while retaining its functions. Having two different solutions called the same thing but working in different ways would have caused endless frustration for users.

Either way, concept maps take longer to produce than mind maps, but have a much higher intrinsic value. Mind maps are more "in the moment" while concept maps hold their value for years, replaying the extra effort.

Hi Renald,

I think another way to approach this is to create a topic style for the verbs. That way the verbs can have multiple connections. As nick mentioned the "Labels" on lines in MindManager currently cannot have multiple connectors. I created the below map by using regular concept topics for everything then applying the verb topic style to the verbs.

If you want to download the map with these styles I uploaded it here. https://app.box.com/s/2z3w6cr0fvzn66wrdt5ji5nf7csu1phy

Why not stick with MIndManager 2016?.
Do you mean your school has MIndManager 9 for Mac?

I know your school has a very lucrative deal with MIndjet through Surf, so money should be not problem when you need to upgrade ;-)

Thank you for your respons. My former employer worked with Mindmanager 16, but Avans has Mindmanager 9 (9.9.1).. that is what I see when I open it ;-)
I am clearly a user, not an expert ;-)
I will discuss your suggestion in our school. So if we upgrade then we will have the 'concept map'- template?

Thanks Sia, I found some time to explore this more and downloaded your map. I also created a new style which speeds up the formatting of the verb branch. I also wonder if a template with a few levels already formatted will help. Keeping the spacing even and well spaced remains a frustrating reality that needs to be addressed and works against achieving truly organic concept maps. For those experimenting - use the arrow keys and the alignment functions to help with alignment and presentation. Hopefully these issues will improve going forward along with the hires issues.

Add me to the list of users who would appreciate improved concept mapping tools. Cmap and Mindomo are way ahead in this particular area. Would much prefer to stick with Mindmanager for everything.
