Connecting to SQL Database

Trying to connect to local instance of SQL server 2008 R2. Have tried all the possible URL/file based ways I can think of to specify server or database but consistently get message, "A database must be specified", with no list of DBs to choose from when I specify server.
What am I doing wrong?
Is there a step by step guide to doing this?
Is 2008 supported?

Nothing yet. Hoping a bit of activity here will provoke a response from somebody in the know.

Add a Database Connection

Name your connection
Choose MS SQL trusted. Only works with Windows Credentials for 2008, so your user must be the same and allowed to the MS SQL server DB

Now you should see a list of databases
