I have imported a word document. Can you select sections of that doc for new or sub topics?

It depends on which product you are using and the structure of the Word document.

As Ary says, if you import a Word document with headings and sub-headings into MM2012, MM should create a map structured with main topics, sub-topics, etc that reflects this - provided that you used Word's styles to format the headings and sub-headings.

If you have created a large document but you didn't use styles, all is not lost, assuming that you were consistent in how you formatted the headings. For example, if you have consistently made main heading paragraphs bold and sub-heading paragraphs italic, you can search the document for bold and italic formatting and replace with Word level 1 and level 2 heading styles respectively (though you should exercise some caution if you have used bold and italics to highlight text in non-heading paragraphs).
