To some extent the terms are interchangeable. In a broad sense "topics" are all the fundamental elements of a map. As the MindManager 2019 Help puts it: "Maps offer a way to aggregate and visualize information and relationships. The basic building-blocks of a map are map topics".

The Help file describes the three varieties of topics - the Central Topic, "the main theme or title of your map", Main Topics, "the major ideas that make up the theme", and Subtopics, which provides "details about a topic".

The other key difference between Main Topics and Subtopics is that there is greater flexibility in moving the former around a map, while the location of the latter is more fixed and determined by the placement of the parent Main Topic and the selected Map Layout. However, Subtopics can be "promoted" to become Main Topics and likewise Main Topics can be "demoted' to become Subtopics of other Main Topics or of other Subtopics.

The heirarchy is represented in the VBA Object Model for MindManager where SubTopics are child objects of Topics and Topics are child objects of the Central Topic, with the SubTopics having SubTopics as their children, allowing you to recurse through the topics on a map in an ordered way to process them.
