It would be great to have "watch folders", where you can specify certain folders within your system as sync folders for the map. Then when new files are added to the folder, they are automatically added to the map, or at least to a queue where you can choose to add the files or not. This is nice when working on large projects where files may change often. Also, if this directory happens to be a Dropbox folder, then other people's file would be added as they added their filers to the shared Dropbox folder.

If I understand your request correct.... This can be done since MM X5 by making a hyperlink to the desired folder instead of to a file.

If you click on the hyperlink in your map you will always see the latest content.
We use this all the time in large projects, where teammembers can add files to a shared folder.
Have not tried it with dropbox, but I assume it will work the same.
