Finish development of Gantt with ALL functionality of JCVGantt.

"For some reason the Mindjet developers have the idea that they are -done- with the implementation of the JCVGantt add-in.

They better look again, since there are many customers who even have returned to MM8 with JCVGantt. That cannot be the goal."

"Ah, where to begin...

For a start, you could restore the Gantt functionality that disappeared when JCVGantt was ""integrated"" into MindManager. JCV wasn't the greatest Gantt program in the world but at least it had things like critical path, some resource management ability and it was also possible to develop add-ins for it - all features which have been lost. And being a separate program meant it had its own window which you could run on a separate monitor - even on my 24"" it's a struggle to look at it in the same window as the map.

The other problem that occurred when it was integrated was that the fixed relationship between start date, duration and end date which JCVGantt had (as do most project management programs) was forced on MM to maintain compatibility. This screwed things up for a lot of people who (like me) wanted to set a task completion date in say a week's time, even if the task needed only one day to finish.

So, basically JCVGantt went from being a modestly capable project manager to being merely a Gantt display for MM, while time management in MM lost a lot of flexibility. Exactly the same sort of dumbing down appears to be happening to Power Markers where after its ""integration"" the more complex features are not provided in MM2012 and we are left only with the marker index display (and yes, I know they are available in the add-in pack, but only on request).

To be frank, I've got to the point where I no longer want to suggest that Mindjet incorporate good add-ins into MM, for fear that their most useful features will disappear in the process." [from Alex]

"Should you add the possibility to see the Gantt view within its own window, then just do it as an option for people which need it, but not as standard, because the current display is very helpful.

To satisfy people which would like to see it on the whole screen, you could add buttons for this. Something like: ""maximize view"", ""standard view""." [from mentalwaves]

"I don't think that JCV Gantt should be the main reference, but general, well-proven project management features. I emphasize this, because not all MM users do know JCV Gantt, but much many of them do very well know general PM software.

I suggest to also consider all the other posts which refer project management like:

- Hourly Task roll-up/break-down
- Gantt timeline in hours, minutes, rather than limited to 1 week
- Task duration and roll up functionality
- ENHANCED ACTIVITY PLANING - conditions for task splitting, repeated tasks, resource distribution
- Task management
- Being able to view/ highlight the critical path in MM2012 and Gantt view (like in MS Project)

Some of them describe quite similar things. I suggest to create some topics which describe the main requests and to add the corresponding current posts as votes and comments to them. This would simplify the forum and voting.

"My suggestion would be:
Simply look at the functionality that was availbale in JCVGantt.

I understand that you wish to avoid the need for rocket science knowledge amongst MindManager users, but....
There is a difference between, features, functions and benefits.
Until now Mindjet seems to implement approx 80% of the features that were in all orginal add-in's, It covers about 65% of the functionality and it provides only 40% of the benefits. " [from Ary]

"I don't know what project mgt they have got in the new mindmanager, but it sounds like considerably less than JCV Gantt, which makes it useless. Restore the connection - much the best way." [from BrianSJ]

"I would appreciate the ability:
- to sort the tasks in Gantt view by resource, due date, or progress (basically the ability to sort and get different views of task info).
- to see all tasks show up in the Gantt report even if i have not yet assigned it a due date." [from tuningin]

"I would like:
1. The task tools to work in minutes, so I could use the function to plan a day e.g. training and events
2. I would like to be able to change the start or finish date of the project and see what the latest start and earliest finish are.
3. I do not want any dates (and times) to be fixed unless I say so. They should only be based on duration and dependencies.
4. I would like the option to add dependencies using the relationship tool brought back.
5. Work time (not duration) to be added. i.e. how many man hours does the task require.
6. To have fixed costs per task and variable costs per resource e.g. person, room or vehicle hire" [from ajwilcox]

"Love the task mgmt I can attach to topics and the rollup it shows for time and status. Would like this same ability to attach cost to an item and have it roll up same way. Resource tracking with Gantt is fine, but showing task cost and overall cost in Gantt would be great as well." [from Keith]

"Hi,

I could not agree more.

One thing that would be tremendous would be to move the subtasks around in the GANTT view ie indent tasks thus putting them under new parents and unindenting them. This should be reflected in the Mind Map. This would really help with breaking down a task into its subtasks. I know you can do this in the mind map, but it would be really helpful to do this in the GANTT. I am sure your could do this in JCVGantt and certainly is brilliant in MS Project.

This is really important..

The point about having the GANTT View in a seperate window is important too since one could put it on a seperate monitor. When one has a large Map and GANTT, space soon becomes very lacking.

I also agree that in the short term we short be able to use JCVGantt, so yes restore the connection until you get the GANTT View sorted.

Thanks,

Edward

P.s To be honest I would have assumed that JCVGantt would have been integrated with complete functionality, obviously I was wrong." [from Edward Bedell]

Hi,

These 2 small improvements would be great:
- days off coloured in the Gantt
- customization of vacations of individual resources
And of course all the functions we enjoyed in JCVGantt!
Thanks

in the JVC Gantt app resetting the whole Project was soo much easier...unless I haven't quite figured it out... Also loading a list of resources was easier and the project summary exports were more easily managed in the JVC gantt client.

My customers report some real reasons why they still use MM8 Plus JCVGantt for projects, where they use MM2012 for most other activities:

You can only enter dependancies at the lowest level. So it is not possible to give all tasks a finish to start dependancy, and then tune the one's with another dependancy. NOTE: the program allows you to enter, but it removes them automatically.

It also has less options, to show actions, lees options for screendesign, less zooming facilites.

NOTE If you load a MM8 map into MM2012 the dependancies all go wrong.

We all hope and pray that MM11 solves all the above.

In Mindjet 11 there is a calc feature available for topic properties.

Would it not be nice if this was available for resources as well?
Eg. Fixed price for a resource topic. Or price per day, hour, minute for a resource topic... etc.

That would give us at least the opportunity to create and calculate the cost of a project ourselves. (although in JCVGantt it was done in One Go ;-)

Hi,

I am now reviewing my mapping tools with the competitors. While other providers do also offer GANTT Views, they also tend to be in the same window. However I believe it is a lost opportunity to not provide the facility to enable the GANTT View to be another window which could show up on a second monitor. Space is really useful when constructing Maps and GANTTs, and multiple monitor use is common place now.

So Lets have a seperate GANTT window option please.
