I can't rename a .mmat file to .mmap

I have uploaded a .mmat file to a folder in Mindjet Web.
I can't open this file as a MindManager map.
I can't rename it to filename.mmap because when I do it becomes filename.mmap.mmat

Do I have to rename template files to .mmap before uploading them to Mindjet Web?

Yes, it looks like you can't change the extension of files from within ProjectDirector.

Is there anything different in the content of a .mmat or .mmap file?

Well, in the .mmat file the root XML-element is called ap:MapTemplate and in a normal .mmap file the root element is called ap:Map. So you might have some unexpected behavior when just renaming a file from .mmat to .mmap as Mindjet will not expect the file to start with ap:MapTemplate
