Import from Word

Using MindManager 2018, importing from Word 365 is a nightmare producing various undesirable results.

Headings styles are ignored entirely if they do not have numbering shown.

Please can you provide proper support documentation on how to do this and preferably a Word template with all the different required styles preset into which we can copy existing documents.

Just to be sure...I am a bit confused by your explanation.

Are you importing  a Word 365 document into MindManager 2018?

or are you exporting a MindManager 2018 map into Word 365?

Morning

Thank you for the quick response.

I am importing a Word 365 document into MindManager 2018.

I have taken a long list and applied Title and heading styles - Map appears with Title as a core subject and everything else in 1 huge sub-topic.

Experimented by exporting a map with topics, subtopics and notes to Word - you get the mapping tool during the export process; which produces a document with sub-topics as headings 1, 2, 3, etc on a new page for each heading, creating a huge document.

Seems odd to have the mapping tool only appear during export and not during import.

Does that help?

And what happens if you import the recently exported from mindmanager to word document (now in Word)?

If that one imports OK and if it creates a new map similar to the one you exported, we eliminated One of the reasons why it may go wrong.

Oddly the document created from the Export from MindManager doesn't number the headings, so that when you try to Import it back, it packs back into the one subtopic.

Is the mapping tool only available during Export?

I don't quite understand what you mean.
If you are in MindManager - the mapping tool - you can do export your map to MSWord etc.
If you are in MindManager you can do import a MSWord document. and if that word document has headings etc. (So that you could generate index pages in MSWord) that structure is reflected in the mindmap that is generated after the import is finished.

Why is the mapping tool only available during export and not during import?

I'm going to try to create my own MindManager Word template - it is, however, disappointing that Mindjet doesn't have one easily available to users who encounter Word Import issues.

You create your own word templates inside word. You don't do that in your mapping tool. MindManager IS your mapping tool. You just select a word template at export time.
This is all well documented in MindManager help.

Your mapping tool, MindManager IS available during import since:
  • You start the import from within MindManager.
  • It returns a map in your mapping tool, called MindManager, once the import is finished.

To follow up what Ary said, I have imported Word documents from Word 365 into MM2028 without any problem and have then exported them back successfully.

I suggest you test the import process using a simple Word document based on the default Normal template and formatted with the default heading styles . Try this with the MM Word import facility rather than using the Send to MindManager or copying the contents of the file. If this works then the problem is likely to be in the formatting of the list document you are trying to import; if it doesn't then you may have a bug of some sort in MM.

Things are changing at Mindjet. Just had a great session with a very senior person within Technical Services and now understand things much better.

We walked through my issues and, annoyingly, everything worked as it ought to.

I think I was trialing Microsoft Office 365 Business Premium at the time, so perhaps there was a problem with that version at that time.

Exporting to Word and Importing from Word using Styles and indented tab lists worked perfectly.

Hi Jim, I’m glad things are working out for you. I am not so fortunate yet. I can’t get Mindjet and Office 365 to synchronize so many features and functions as advertised are yet to be realized. Been trying for about a month to get help from multiple sources but for one reason or another it’s still not resolved. How can I get in touch with the person who helped you? Thanks

Afternoon Max

Sorry, have been locked down on a project and am just getting round to reading emails.

I would summarise your issues here and then post directly to Mindjet Support here:

https://secure.mindjet.com/support/contact/form.aspx?lang=en.

Let me know if you don't get a response and I'll kick it over to my contact.

Regards

James.
