Improvement of the filter function

First. Mind Manager is excellent but am I the only one who spend some much time on filtering? If you have any proposal on how to do it actually without removing the filter. Start searching again and have 100 different queries (Actually I have not but I feel I need to if I should manage the different searches).

I am using Mind Manager daily to handle tasks/projects assigned to me. And the deadlines. What to do today, this week, next week etc. Then Tags, grouping, ressources etc. helps me control the status, how long is this task in the process etc. and I have sub tasks to handle every action I need to do.

I have some proposals to improve the filter functions both Quick filter and power filter.

Every time I search I need to Hide completed tasks first. This is one thing.

To do a new search I need to remove the filter which removes the entire filter and then I can start to select again.

Suggestions:

  1. When selecting quick search as past due, due today, due tomorrow, due next week Mind Manager should know if a query/powerfilter search is used.
Ex. search for a certain TAG or a project and then show all not completed tasks matching the search. Without the need for removing the filter. Then do the power filter. Then do the quick search. Past due shows – Past due. When selecting due today as an example it should immedeately search for due today without need for remove the filter. But you show past due and if you then search for due today the system shows if you have changed some of the past due to due today instead of searching all tasks in the map which are due today.

  2. Powerfilter. It could be very good if it was possible to make a combination of Show/Hide (maybe also fade but for me I never use that function). But maybe you make a search and then it shows a lot but you do not want some other task to show which you now can search again and then hide. But why not make a query which do this in one go?

  3. Attached mails should be viewed also when the task is showed in a filter. If I want to filter what I need today I cannot jump to my added mails quickly because they are filtered out as well. If I have drag and dropped mails to a certain task they should be viewed when the task is shown in a filter.

I could properly come up with more suggestions but if some improvements could be made to the new version I will be more than happy :-)

Thanks
Thor

I passed your idea's to development.
Usually they love all suggestions and regard those as extended source of idea's.
There is no guarantee that all is implemented in the next release though.

Hi Thor, have a look at the Power-Filter option in the ribbon and in the MindManager options. Maybe some of your questions will be answered.

It's also possible to save querries. They are stored in the map and you can use them from the filter drop&down menu.

attached emails are listed in the elements of the Map-Index.

Hi Andreas. I know about saving queries. I also know there is a Mind Manager option to remove filter before search. Both will not work.

Ex. I can save a quirie but how do I make a quirie where I say Hide all completed task and search for all due today. Without needing to select all states for not completed. There could be other things I want to remove in my search.

About remove filter. Now I tested to set this remove filtrer in the options. Your quich search for past due og due today or due for tomorrow does not remove the filter.

And actually one of my points is that you need to save 100's of queries to fullfill the requirements because your filter functions is not that flexible. Or you need to search multiple times or remove filter and search again etc. to come to the search you now want.

Cumulative filtering has always been a bit problematic in MindManager and I agree that it should be easier to save complex filters.

Assuming you have MM 2018 there are two alternatives which can be used independently or together. The first is conditional formatting, which you can use as a sort of cumulative filter by building sets of complex rules, each of which can have multiple triggers. For example you can create a single rule which applies a specific fill colour to tasks which are less than 100% complete and which are due today. If you wish you can then use the power filter to show only topics with that specific fill colour.

If you are already using fill colours to show something else you can choose another effect - for example, text colour, bold text, line colour, etc. You could choose something quite subtle that wouldn't stand out to the casual observer but which could be detected by the power filter.

The second option is to use dashboard maps. You can select part or all of the source map to show in a separate dashboard map and apply specific filters, with or without using conditional formatting. You could make multiple dashboard maps, each with different filters - you just need to remember to save the filter and reapply it every time you open each dashboard map or when you make changes in the source map.

Hí Alex.

Thank you for your answer. I really appreciate this and I will look into it. I have MM 2018 and I already use conditional formatting. It is also a really improvement in the new version as I can have bigger branches red color, special form etc. when they are past due. One for due today in yellow also big and a little bit smaller yellow for due this week.

And as I started to say in my original post is also that MM is a fantastic piece of software but for filter there is space for improvements.

All is about to get an overview and improve the efficiency. What I like is to prioritize. Sometimes in the morning I looked at past due, due today, due this week and maybe change the due date to set a goal for my self what I will accomplish today and then I will see a list of my tasks due today. And then use tags for indicating type of task, maybe status. Is it in test phase, User test or whatever or complete the task. And I think I do it almost as efficient it can be with the way MM is working now so I just hope you will consider my proposals.

Actually I have a new idea as well. I also ended up saying I might could come up with more.

So number 4 :-)
When you look at your tasks and they are filtered then everything else in the MAP is hidden as I write also mails for one thing. And subtasks if they do not fullfill the selection in the Query.

Then I select a specific Branch and type F4 to filter the specific branch only for the task I am interesting in right now and then I want to see all I have to do so I remove the filter. Maybe to schedule the entire task including sub tasks or to do all the sub tasks as well.

Here it would be genius if there was the possibility only to remove the filter on the branch which is selected by F4 so it does not do it for the entire MAP because then I do what I have to do and then press F4 again and now I can do another filtering, but this was not needed if the filter was not removed from the MAP. And as I say I cannot save a query for what I want to see as I cannot combine what is hidden and what should be shown.

So my post is some suggestions for improvement. I know you cannot promise it will be made in the next release but if you will consider my suggestions then maybe suddenly there is a version where the filter functionality is improved. And I have seen other posts about filter so I know I am not the only one :-)

Thanks
Thor

Thanks Thor. I just want first to clarify that I'm an end user, like you, and not an employee or official representative of Mindjet - in fact most of the people who provide advice on this forum do so in a voluntary capacity.

I suggest you post these suggestions as ideas in the hope that Mindjet will take a look at them.

Yes. I didn't know if you were an employee or user but I hope they take a look.

It was actually on a chat with Mindjet some time ago that they suggested me to put this and you can see the first reply that it is passed to the developer team so I hope we get a wonderful surprise one day that the filter option is improved :-)
