Should I link or attach drop box files? I work on multiple devices all with local dropbox folders. Thanks!

- Link if you want to access the latest version (updated by Dropbox) at any time
- Attach if you want to archive a snapshot of the file and not keep it updated

The advantage of attached files is that they will go wherever the map goes. Links will go out of range if you send the map to someone else.

thx Nick, but I don't think Attach will show the archived file... for example, if I attach a MS Project file, later edit that file, the click on attach in the map will open up the updated MS project file. Also, I am a bit worried that attaching files do NOT go wherever the map goes, as I am not sure if the path is relative or not to the file structure in Dropbox. Confusing eh?

Hello Jiggy - are we definitely talking about MindManager 14 for Windows? This is not the behaviour that I am seeing. "Attach" in MM14 for Windows should mean "take a snapshot of the file and embed it into the map", which then insulates it from external updates. Hopefully I am not digging a hole for myself here.

yes, V14 user here and i'v tested that part. You always get the updated file on dropbox, which is what I want anyway. ps. Foxholes are nice, we liked them in the Army.

If the links are going to work on multiple devices then the URL needs to be same from each device. If you are using a Dropbox folder on multiple PCs and maybe Macs the simple relative file links will work. e.g. ..\..\my.doc These do not work on the iPad or iPhone.

You can get the shared URL public link from Dropbox and link to the web version of the file. I couldn't drag and drop these from the Dropbox web page to MindManager. However when first I tried to use these links on Mindjet iPad it had added some extra http's and it didn't work the first time.

The iPad and iPhone apps will not open attached files in maps

If you can open the map on multiple devices, who is the master?  Dropbox noted that I was editing the map below from two devices and created a new copy for one the devices with the device name included in the file name: "Dropbox Test (2740p's conflicted copy 2014-09-26)"

Try opening this map and see which links and attachments work.

Here are some previous thoughts about Dropbox and MindManager.

Andrew, thx for that! It looks like Attachments works the best then, as those connections work great in your test file with the added bonus of opening up the content in a sidebar browser. Relative links do not work, and Public links work, by downloading the attachments (also nice). Well, I think that sorts it for me... I'm going with attachments, as that seems to work across the board.

Ps. Nothing works in the Android app either... but no surprise there... the overall quality of apps on my Note II is pretty bad. Thinking about getting the iPhone6+ to replace it, if it does not bend too much :)

Hi Andrew & Jiggy Public links and attachments work perfectly.  Also Public links work in iThoughts round tripping the map from MM to IThoughts and back.  Attachments in MM are embedded into Topics in iThoughts, therefore also accessble on the mobile

For clarity is anyone getting Mindjet iOS apps to open the attachments?

No they don't work in the MJ app.  I cannot even link to Dropbox files on the iPad app.  iPhone app links to DB files, but map does not have active links to docs.  iThoughts by far the preferred app on IOS
