I'd like to be able to merge two similar topic trees. For example they could be two drafts of a paper that I want to combine and save for reference.

Hello Jim
I am not aware of any macros that can do this at the moment, but most things are possible with software. There is not much already built into MindManager 2012 that would help with this; it is the kind of function that would work much better with (for example) automatic retention of editing history. But we do not have that to work with.
Can you describe what you want to see in the merged map, and how you would work with it?
best regards

I suppose the way it would work would be to traverse two trees, a master, and a secondary, and as it goes ignore identical nodes. If a node does not exist in the master, but is in the secondary, add the node to the master. If it is missing in the secondary, flag the one in the master with a tag like "deleted".
If two nodes have some level of similarity in their text, (maybe some number of words that are the same) but are not, identical create a new node above the one in the master, mark it with a tag "reconcile" and add the secondary node to it. That way the user can filter the map for that tag and hand reconcile the differences.
Further, instead of merging two maps also allow (or instead) merge two trees where the heads of the trees are identified in some manner.

Hello Jim
That all sounds doable. I would be happy to give some tech support to you or anyone who wants to try it in the macro language. There are also independent developers who could do this on a commercial basis. Another option would be to approach Mindjet Professional Services and ask if they would like to help.

Jim,
If you would like to connect with me directly I can discuss the possibilities of acheiving this for you.
Olympic are a major developer of MindManager add-ins and carry out bespoke development on request and this does indeed sound like something we could help you with.
If you would be interested in taking this further then please drop me an email.

Unfortunately, I'm in no position to pay for this to be done. I have often thought that it would enhance Mindjet's product to promote macro development. They seemed to make some effort at it a number of years ago, but I'm not seeing any obvious interest on their part now, though I may be just missing something.
