Maps not connecting properly via Chrome/IE

Currently (as of today) all of my maps are 'locked' for editing, in that when I try to open them I receive a persistent 'read only' message in the top, left-hand corner of the map windows, with a 'connecting' message in the bottom right.

I have tried rebooting my computer, and this *may* be a network issue at work (which would be an utterly horrendous situation, if it continues!). Saying that since this is a browser-based tool surely there are no ports to block which would cause the error described above?
