Material Requirement Planning: Is it possible with MM?

I work in a small enterprise and we don't have an erp system.

I use excel and mindmanager to calculate our product prices.
This works very well in MM.

Now I am thinking about using MM for material requirement planning.
Because we work in an engineering to order environment it is enough for me to know with components I have to manufacture or to buy for one project.

I tried two ways (both ways based on the material calculation how can see above):

First I insert each component and each assembly as one single topic with a "name tag" so I can sum the parts unter the tag. This works only for very small products because the number of topics explode if I have bigger products or a lot of products in a project.

Second I created a product breakdown structure with "collecting topics" for the same component by using custom properties (because it is much clearer than the map with the high number of topics). Then I created a custom field called "required amount" and calculate downwards. But now I have the problem that a component is used in different assemblys.

Is there a way to sum the required amount of these components?
