Multiple Hyperlinks - Please can I switch them off

"I would like to be able to switch of the topic multiple hyperlink function. I just want a single hyperlink which is overwritten not added to when I drag a link: URL or file to a topic. Having only the first link in a set exported in the web exports does not work for me.

The next question is should this be a map option or a global option.

"I was (and still am) excited about the multiple hyperlinks. I have wanted them for a long time.
Part of this debate is the simple fact that mind mapping CAN be a very personal process.
There are times when a map will only make sense to the author and other times it IS a very effective communications tool.

I like the ""manage"" aspects of the view but am sympathetic to Andrews issue It seems that in addition to an ""on off"" there should be a much better ""export"" process where each link would be separately attached to the topic." [from Bob Levy]

"While I strongly agree with Bob about the usefulness of multiple hyperlinks per topic and have outlined why in a comment on Andrw's blog, I certainly support Andrew's request that this be made an optional switch.

I think that this should be made a map-based option, maily so that people don't screw up their existing maps accidentally by switching off multiple hyperlinks. However an alternative approach that might be simpler would be to have a switch that is set globally to govern behaviour when a hyperlink is attached to a topic that has one already.

This would have three options:

a) New hyperlink always overwrites existing hyperlink
b) New hyperlink is always added to existing hyperlink(s) &
c) User is asked to confirm whether to overwrite or add to an existing hyperlink each time a new one is added.

I also agree with Bob that if Web export can't handle multiple hyperlinks then it would be good to be able to have them ""exploded"" out as multiple sub-topics. This and the whole process of adding multiple hyperlinks would be assisted if there was the option to add a short name to each hyperlink. This would form the name of the exported hyperlink and also assist identifying individual hyperlinks within the map when they have a long URL." [from Alex]

"Multiple Hyperlinks were always possible with (empty) subtopics.
Those who requested the feature probably would not have asked if they had had proper training in the possibilities of the tool.

Mindjet developers obviously just reacted to this request without thinking one step ahead.
Andrew you got my vote.

"Ary, please don't jump to conclusions about people who have requested this, including me.

I'm an experienced MM user who has made use of empty subtopics for this purpose in the past but always found them unsatisfactory and cumbersome when all I wanted to do was to add a group of related hyperlinks to a single topic without adding more topics (visible or otherwise) to a map. I won't go into too much detail here about how I use multiple hyperlinks, having posted on the Yahoo MM group and Andrew's blog about this, but one thing they are really useful for is making multiple links on a single topic to your own documents across folders when you don't want to attach documents directly.

Also, MM has always had a comparable facility to put multiple attachments on a single topic and I don't see people criticising this - the behaviour regarding hyperlinks is now consistent with this. In addition a number of MM competitors have had this feature for years.

As I indicated I do however support Andrew's request for a facility to turn this feature off if it is interfereing with web export." [from Alex]

"Another use case where multiple hyperlinks fail for me: I have hundreds perhaps thousands of maps with hyperlinks on them, they go back to MindManager 3.0. Today I opened a five year old map, ctrl-clicked a link and the web site address was not valid. I found the new URL for this business in my browser and dragged it to the topic on the map. Fortunately I remembered that I have to edit the link and remove the dead URL. In all versions before MindManager 2012, I would have had nothing to do, my map would have been correctly and efficiently updated." [from ajwilcox]

"Interestingly how different people use the same feature in very different ways.
For me, multiple hyperlinks is an important improvement, but I never ever tried dragging links to topics! I always use keyboard shortcuts if possible, and therefore I would be happy if pressing Ctrl+K will not overwrite existing hyperlink (as it does currently), but will offer an option to add another one instead.

At least, it is obvious that this feature is implemented inconsistently: using mouse defaults to adding another hyperlink, and using keyboard defaults to overwriting the existing one. There surely should be an option to customize both behaviors." [from ]

"MichaelDeutch, thanks! Unfortunately, this keyboard shortcut is not mentioned in the documentation (Help - Keyboard Shortcuts). Probably, this section of help file needs updating." [from ]

Poking this one back to the top.

I realised I had a link to the wrong URL on a topic. Dragged the correct one directly off the client's web site. Exported the map to the web. Pointed the client at clickable map, who immediately noticed the wonky link! The first link is the one that appears in the export rather than the correction you have recently dragged on to the topic.

I repeat my request that users have the ability to disable the multiple hyperlink function. It does not suit my workflow.
