Need help right now - lost work in Mac Version

I need help right now. I just saved my Map with the Mac Version and most topics are gone as well as the format.

Please get in touch to help me recover the map.

This is the work of several days for a meeting tomorrow morning (I am on German time).

This happened some days ago with another map. I could recover an OK version with time machine. This time I don't seem to have one.

Thanks
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

Can you please open a ticket with our Technical Support team. We will need to get some information from you or a copy of the map if you are receiving XML parsing errors. Please use the following link to open a case and I will try to expedite with our EMEA TS Team.

Thanks Terry,

Just added a ticket based on the link in your first reply.

Can I expect an answer within the next minutes, please?

I also tried to reach German support, but first couldn't find the number, the realized I had to apply for a mindjet ID, the I was told I had already one, then I initiated the lost password process. Might be easy when you have a general question, but not when your precious work is lost and you are under time pressure.

Thanks anyways.

Sorry for being so persistent, but - in case I haven't mentioned yet - this is highly important. It is real work with a due date tomorrow early morning German time.

I opened the map file as a zip and can see that the xml document seems to contain the last text I entered. This at least is comforting.

I don't see any problems with the XML structure as the map is very big and as I don't think I should be fiddling too much with this.

If there is a link to how to fix this myself, please let me know.

I could probably fix this myself in the future. As I said, on first glance the XML looked OK though. A link to a knowledge base article might be good + how to avoid the problem.

Hi Stefan, I am re-posting this information from ~1 year ago for your review

We have found that many of the corruptions that we find in the XML files are related hidden characters that are introduced into a map through copy/paste from an HTML document, PDF or from Word.

Ultimately, if you want to repair your own XML files, this can be done through an XML or text editor, but this is not for the faint of heart. To access the XML file contained in an MMAP after a corruption, you would need to rename the .MMAP to .ZIP and then remove the Document.xml file that resides at the root of the file structure. One you have the XML file in an XML editor you can typically scan the document and validate the XML or go to the location that is specified when you opened the file in MindManager (i.e., "(128:2460) Illegal xml character") to find and fix the corrupted character(s). Once the XML file has been repaired and validated you can add it back to the .ZIP archive and then rename the file back to .MMAP to open in MindManager.

As I mentioned, this is not an easy process and it is not recommended which is why we typically request that the files be sent to us for repair.

Thanks,
Terry

Hello Terry,

I'm currently having the same problem that Stephan had before.

I wish if I could send the mmap file to your team for repair but it can't be sent to outside because of the NDA with my client, so I would like to repair it by myself and I need more information from you.

As you said above, "remove the Document.xml file that resides at the root of the file structure",  where exactly is the "the root of the file structure" you mean?

Do you mean "the root of the MindManger app directory"? I don't find the Document.xml anywhere on my PC (I've searched thoroughly...).

Thank you in advance.

Terry,

I've sussed that out and solved the problem.
You meant that .mmap file is actually a .zip file and there is Document.xml in that .zip file.

My file is successfully repaired!

Thank you.

Hi Noriko, I'm trying to solve the problem as you did it. I've done everything but when I change the file back to .mmap from .zip, the program won't open it.

Did you change the unzipped file to a zipped file by just compressing it?

1. change file name from xxx.mmap to xxx.zip (ignore the warning)

 2. start XML Notepad and open XSL Output tab

 3. drop the xxx.zip on to XSL Output tab
-> "Document.xml" should be displayed in the XSL Output tab

 4. drag the Document.xml to your desktop (or somewhere)

 5. click the TreeView tab of XSL Notepad

 6. drag the Document.xml from your desktop to the TreeView tab
-> details of the error should be shown, so memorise the location of the error
-> click "No" for time being

 7. open the Document.xml on your destop using a text editor
choose an editor which shows the row number and etc

 8. delete the error part from the Document.xml and save it

 9. go back to XML Notepad's XSL Output tab

10. delete the Document.xml from XSL Output tab, and put the edited Document.xml onto the same tab
then save and close the XSL Notepad

11. change the file name from xxx.zip back to xxx.mmap

12. open the xxx.mmap with MindManager and see if it works

That's all (hopefully)

BTW, "Unzipping xxx.zip" & "Editing Document.xml" & "Zipping" didn't work for me.

I seem to remember that a colleague once told me that if you open the corrupt file on iThoughtsHD (Apple iPhone/iPad app) you can then re-save it as a MindManager format map and it repairs badly formed or corrupt xml......

Might be worth a look if it is really that easy.

I also understand that a Mac app has been developed by the same guy, (Craig Scott), called iThoughtsX and that may also do the same.

Hope this is help for future.

Terry, Nigel, thanks for your further input on that.

( I do not think I copied any text from the applications mentioned. Might be wrong. I however had the feeling that something went wrong when I had the map open for several days and the system went to sleep. That is when I first had this problem - not today. )

The meeting went well and the map was usable thanks to Thilo from German support.

However ...

1. The map is filled with special characters ( can't paste them in here ) which do appear out of the blue.
2. I had observed those characters in previous versions/maps already and always just deleted them with no problem. If you are married to a piece of software, you are willing to put up with some of its short comings.
3. This time, I could definitely observe these characters to appear and disappear based on topic drag&drop operations, definitely not based on any copy&paste operation from external sources as you described.
4. I saved the map with a different name and was working on this map again in order to summarize the meeting and I regularly saved it.
5. Funny enough, I reopened it and get the message "Document could not be opened".
6. I used Firefox, XMLLint, Xcode to fix the corrupted XML again.
7. I get a ZIP processing error now. Renamed it to XMMAP as suggested in another post in this forum, but to no avail.
8. I finally took the fixed Document.xml, renamed this to XMMAP and was able to open it in MindManager.

But what now? Will I have to expect this map to be corrupted again when I edit and save it next? Should I create a new map and copy individual topics over?

In summary:
-------------------

I spent altogether 2 hours waiting on Mindjet support and another 2 on fixing the 2nd occurrence of the problem myself.

Just put yourself in my shoes: from now on going forward, I will have to take the extra step of reopening a saved map just to ensure my work is not accidentally gone. And if so, I am better prepared with some XML tools.

I asked some weeks ago before updating to Mountain Lion whether the product is stable as I read about some issues and the answer was yes, it is : https://community.mindjet.com/mindjet...

However, in your answer above I learn that the problem in question has been there at least for a year, which in software development terms is for ever.

If this continues to happen - and the posts in this forum regarding lost data and the like do suggest so - these problems do severely outperform the product's benefit.

Question:
--------------

Is this fixed in the latest Mac version that comes bundled with the Windows version?

I just don't know how to continue ...

I split part of the map and saved it into a different map, which now also lacks format information and - more importantly - many topics.

The map I got back from support broke again, as described above, without copy and paste of external data.

I fixed it myself as described, was able to work with it for a while and now I am back to the same problem.

Apparently, fixing the map either by myself or by support does not guarantee it to be usable at all.

German support answered "Ich kann nicht genau sagen wie der Fehler entstanden ist so ist es schwer tips zu geben." which translates to I don't know what causes the problem so we cannot provide you with tips how to prevent this in the future, which is different from what you suggest above. However, your warnings as to what not to do in a map ( which by the way is all standard activities which make the product useful ) are nebulous to say the least.

I have two choices now:

I either continue with the map, which has been a working document for 2 weeks now and contains highly important information to our project - so obviously I'd prefer that. However - it seems that by the time I summarized our current status using the map, I will have wasted at least an entire working day.

Or I "fix" it again, export it to a different format and continue there.

Which route do you suggest I take?

And to repeat my question above: Is this fixed in the latest Mac version that comes bundled with the Windows version?

Why not check the document for potential problems before saving it?

Again ... all I do is adding topics by typing and rearranging the map by drag & drop. I removed already half of the topics in an attempt to minimize the risk of the map breaking again.

Hi Stefan,

I requested that Thilo follow up with you further to get the specific of the reproducible error that you are reporting. Hopefully, Thilo has already called or emailed you to offer you assistance. If you continue to have issues, I would recommend that you open a case with our technical support team as community support for XML issues is highly unlikely and will be routed to our support teams.

Try saving the map as 'MindManager Map XML' (.xmmap) from MindManager for Mac (see screenshot below) and see if that helps. If that doesn't work, you can also send the map to me (mathieu@ahacoaching.nl) so I can try to fix the map for you.
