Repeated filtering seems to corrupt map when it is saved

I have a map with several hundred topics and sub-topics, the latter containing paragraphs of text. Most of these have multiple icons and tags from different icon and tag groups which I have used to code the sub-topics, based on their content. I use power filters to more clearly display patterns and correlations within these topics, which represent survey answers (use I know there are programs specifically for this task like Nvivo, but this would be overkill for this project and besides MM provides a good visual representation).

The problem is that I can while away the hours quite happily applying different combinations of icons and tags through the power filter and the map will remain quite stable. However if I save it after doing this the map is often corrupted and MM refuses to reopen it. The backup map may or may not be OK, depending on when it was last saved.

The obvious workaround which I have resorted to is to make a copy of the original map and use this to do the filtering. The problem is that often in playing around with the filters you can discover a topic that was incorrectly coded or you want to make some other change to the map. This means you have to make a note of these changes so you can apply them to the original map as there is a chance that changes to the map copy could be lost if it is corrupted when saved.

Am I alone in this or have other people experienced the same problem?

I have maps which sound similar but have not yet experienced this problem, so this sound ominous. Does it happen if you save the map in a filtered state, or does it only need to have filters defined in it? Did it ever happen on MindManager 14?

Mindjet support should be able to determine what has gone wrong in a corrupted map. Do you use any unusual punctuation characters in the marker names? That could be the sort of thing that breaks XML if not properly escaped.

Thanks Nick. I usually save the maps in an unfiltered state but after I have spent a long time filtering them with various combinations of tags and icons. I haven't saved any of the filter settings for reuse but the power filter usually remembers the last filter applied which could be an issue. And it doesn't seem to be related to the number of topics with tags and icons, as the base map is fine - it's just the copies I made to which I've been applying the filters that seem to fall over.

At this stage I've learnt to live with it and the project is nearly complete so I don't need to take it up with Mindjet - in any case I couldn't forward them the particular map involved for confidentiality reasons. And I can't say whether this is a problem for MM 14 or not because I've never developed a map like this in MM 14.

When I have the time I'll experiment with whether this is a problem right from the first time I filter or if it takes a while to occur, and also if clearing the filter completely before saving makes any difference.

I have not experienced this problem. If it happens again, would you be able to post a screenshot of the XML processing error (of any) that pops up?

Sorry Mathieu, I should have been more precise. There is no error message — MindManager simply refuses to open the map and locks up.
