Unfortunately neither the built-in Word export facility nor the WordX add-in which I normally recommend for more complex exports handles the export of floating topics. I suspect part of the reason for this is the difficulty in deciding where they should appear in the exported document.
There are a couple of work-arounds:
- You can create the supposedly floating topics as attached topics but format them either with no lines or lines which match the colour of the map background (usually white). These topics will then appear to float on the map but will be regarded as subtopics during the export process, appearing as sub-headings in the resulting document under the heading for the topic to which they are attached. This works OK for main topics but if you apply this approach to sub-topics your placement options are obviously limited. Perhaps more of an issue is that if you number topics and sub-topics there is no way to exclude these “floating” topics in MM.
You can create the floating topics as call-outs, again formatting them to have no lines. While formatting options are slightly more limited with call-outs than for topics it is much easier to place these where you want to on the map where they will appear to float and they won’t be included in topic numbering. If you adopt this approach you will have to use MM's built-in export feature, as the WordX add-in can’t handle call-outs. The call-outs will appear in the exported document under the topic to which they were attached as bullet points within a yellow box. There doesn’t appear to be any way to change this in the MM export template but you can always reformat them in Word and at least they are easy to find.
