Shortcut for "insert as new topic"

With the focus is on a branch in a map you can right-click an icon in the library and select "insert as new topic" which then adds the icon and allows you to type text. Nice feature.

When brainstorming I want to be able to do this via a keyboard shortcut so as to speed the process up. Is there a way I can add this command to a keyboard shortcut?

Also, I'd like to be able to add a Floating Branch via a shortcut. I guess, if possible, this would be similar?

Thanks

Hi Tim

Press Insert.

These are the shortcuts for adding topics:

Add subtopic
 Insert or Ctrl+Enter

Add sibling topic
 Enter

Add sibling topic (as previous sibling)
 Shift+Enter

Insert parent topic
 Ctrl+Shift+Insert

Add callout topic
 Ctrl+Shift+Enter

A list of the shortcut keys are available by clicking the question mark icon in the Quick Access Toolbar or File - Help - Keyboard - Shortcuts

There is no shortcut for floating topics. My suggested work arounds are:

  1. Click the mouse at the required location and start typing.
  2. Insert new topic, press shift and drag topic to the require position. Let go of the mouse button before releasing the shift key.  You can type the topic text before or after moving.
  3. You drag any topic to turn it into a floating topic by holding down the shift key.
Hope that helps

Thanks Andrew. So are you saying that you can't map a keyboard shortcut to "insert as new topic" from an icon in the Library?

A different question.  You can assign most functions in the ribbon to the Quick Access Toolbar by right clicking and then "Add to Quick Access Toolbar".  You can customise the QAT by right clicking it.

Icons in the library can not be assigned shortcuts to my knowledge.

New functions can be added as macros or plugins. Plugins can add new objects to the Ribbons.

Tim,

I don't know if it helps or if you already know how to do this, but you can create a new folder in the Icons library - say a Favourites folder - and group your most commonly-used icons there.

This saves a little bit of time if you are brainstorming as you don't have to hunt through the various icon folders every time to get the one you want. You can do the same with the other groups in the Library tab, as well as with Map Parts.
