Stale $lock files - how to safely remove?

I have about a dozen semi-hidden lock files that MindManager 2012 (under Windows 7) has not removed. The files start with a "~$" prefix, and end with ".~lock", with the string in the middle being the full name of the file. The respective files have 2011 and 2012 modification dates.

I can open the respective mmap files, and the map opens properly. I then close the file using "file->close" from Mindmanager ... and the lock files still exist. None of the modification dates on the lock files have changed.

How can I safely remove these lock files? I did not want to simply delete them for fear that it might make the primary file un-usable.

Your thoughts?

Deleting them has not made any difference to the primary file for me.

Search and delete to the Recycle Bin. You could then restore if need be.
