Unable to connect to any external data sources (Access, Excel, or .csv)

I'm currently evaluating MindJet 2018 and looking at database connectivity options. Thus far, I have been unable to connect to any external data sources, including the sample Access database MindJet provides. I simply get the "Could not connect" error when hitting the Test button in the Add a database connection box for every connection I try. I see others appear to have had similar issues over the years and believe I have tried most, if not all, the proposed remedies. Any guidance others could provide would be much appreciated.

  • Mindjet 2018 64-bit Trial
  • Office 2016 64-bit (as part of Office 365 subscription)
  • Windows 10 64-bit

Troubleshooting Steps Tried thus far:
  • Confirmed running 64-bit versions of all software.
  • Repaired Office and MindJet in that order.
  • Verified Mindjet MindManager Add-In running in Excel 2106
  • Verified Database Linker (v18.1.154.0) running in MindJet
  • Verified Database Linker (v18.1.154.0) running in MindJet
  • No Add-ins running in Access 2016
While I doubt this has anything to do with it, I do have MindJet 9.2 installed on my machine.

Hi Jimnar and if you simply select the Sample D/B in the drop down window what happens?

Colin, I installed MindManager 2018 on a second machine to see if that might be the cause of my issue. Sadly, I received the same error. Here is what I see on the machine. It is also a 64-bit machine running 64-bit Windows 10, 64-Bit Office and 64-Bit MindManager 2018 trial.

Just tried a third machine and seeing the same thing. Maybe because I'm running a trial version?

Any Mindmanager installation should come with the sample database.
I trust you did a standard installation and did not go for special?
Sometimes you decide you don't need something and is needed for functions like this one.

But if you have MM vs 9 installed... the database linker was already available in that version. Does it work if you try it there?
I so, than the versions may have some problems when both are installed. They may use the same resources.

The Database linker has practically the same in functionality in MM2018.

@Ary, Colin is correct. The MindJet 9.2 I was referring to was an older version of MindManager.

Hi Ary I assume it is MindManager V9 SP2 - that is older than even you & I! but it will not make any difference to MM2018

Hi Jim I would suggest you un-install your current MM2018, and install a 32-Bit MindManager 2018 trial

Colin, I read a few posts from community users concerning this issue. One stated that I needed to run the 64-bit version of MM2018 if my version of Office was 64-bit. That being said, I'll go ahead and remove/reinstall 32-bit versions of both, if I can figure out how to download the 32-bit version of MM2018.

I installed the trial on yet another machine, this time running 32-bit Office. The installation program seems to decide for me if it is going to download and install MindManager 32-bit or 64-bit. It downloaded and installed the 32-bit version of MindManager on this machine. Low and behold, I was able to connect to the sample data source without a hitch. I don't know if MindManager decides what version to install based on the bit-level of the operating system or the bit-level of Office. I suspect it is the OS, but I have yet to test that.

Is anyone else out there using the database connectivity with 64-bit MM 2018 with 64-bit Office 2016?

The database linker ist an very old add-in and in MM2018 it is deactivated by default.
This add-in was developed for 32-bit and as far as I know never updted for 64-bit.
So this might be the reason why it doesn't work on your system.

The MindManager installer came with MM2017 and it looks at your MS office bit-version. so the correct MindManager wil be installed.
There are direct links to MM2018 32 and 64 bit download available. Send me an email and I'll pass it on to you.
