Why is there an exclamation mark in progress icon when it ́s new (0 %)?
Am I missing a smart thought?

This is not the only unneccesary "small symbol", I think. E.g. when using autocalc several symbols turns up.

Could be related to the 'moving from ideas to action' thing... not sure :)
There are some use cases where it's OK to have tasks that are not started yet.

Could be.
But I think the exclamation mark does not add any value, it only clutters the interface.
And Mindjet can not know if an empty progress icon need to be pointed out with an exlamation mark. In some case perhaps, but I use it to indicate that a task is accepted by the resource, but not yet started.
