Maybe I 've missed something but for the last fifteen years I thought that when I saved a map for the first time, the file name suggested is the Central Topic text not "map 1 (2).mmap" or similar.
Is this happening to you to?

This happens to me if I create a new map, enters some text in the central topic and hits ctrl-s
BUT, if I hit enter or leave the text field so that I am no longer in topic "text edit mode" (so to say) it behaves normally using the text I just entered. This sounds ok to me.

Andrew, my experience is the same as yours - no matter how I try to save the map I get the default file name/number and not the central topic text. The odd thing is that this behaviour started not with the current version but a while ago; in my experience it seems to have been around at least since V15.

That's interesting: I'm experiencing the same behaviour as Lars-Erik on MM15 (32-bit) and MM2016 (64-bit) and am unable to replicate the behaviour from Alex and Andrew.
However, when enabling the 'File name in workbook tabs' option in MindManager 2016 a filename of 'Map2' was suggested when saving the map.
Seems like the behaviour is related to that specific option in MindManager?

Nice observation!
I can confirm that that change in settings changes the behavior as discussed.
I did not have this option enabled but when enabling it I observe the same behavior as Andrew reported originally.

Thank you Mathieu. That works. I have a vague memory that you could change the " 'File name in workbook tabs" by right clicking the Workbook Tabs bar but this doesn't work now. In MindManager 15 this does pop up a menu but that option is not included.
