It would be wonderful just to have a switch: "Show past-due".
Conditional formatting based on task due dates at the individual task level was just one of the things the late, great Power Markers add-in could do - before it was purchased by Mindjet. You could use it to conditionally change fill colours to show not only which individual tasks were overdue but also when current tasks were about to fall due, for example, which tasks were due that day, the next day, and so on. The range of options could also be linked to an index like the one shown below:
Power Markers was very powerful and flexible though admittedly a little tricky to use; as a very unfortunate consequence, conditional formatting and a number of other features were deleted to make it more user-friendly when Mindjet turned it into the Marker Index. This was a great loss however and consequently I use dashboard maps a lot less than I used to.
When I complained at the time I was told that Mindjet were exploring options to expand the range of things that the Smart Fill feature could do but I've seen little evidence of this and certainly there hasn't been any attempt to link Smart Fill to task due dates. Presumably Mindjet still have the original Power Markers code and I strongly suggest that you look at whether it could be used to incorporate task date-based conditional formatting into either the Marker Index or Smart Fill.
So Bjorn, if you check the 'Roll up Task' box for the parent of your sub-topics, you will get red for past due (or any color you select actually) and yellow for 'at risk' and all of the other sub-topics will still be present. This is not a total solution for what you are asking but it is useful for the 'past-due' and 'at risk' sub-topics at least.
When we originally added Past Due and At Risk highlighting, we chose to only apply the highlighting to rolled-up topics as an easy means for our users to identify at risk and past due tasks in their project plans. We can consider removing the roll-up requirement in a future release.
I am converting this topic to an Idea and welcome your additional feedback.
Bjorn, Alex and Mathieu, thanks for the initial input.
In the longer term it would be great if the At Risk highlighting could be expanded to match the four states which Mathieu pointed out are available on the Power Filter menu - due today, due tomorrow, due this week, due next week. Consistent with my comment above, the ability to highlight these extra states should be optional and the ability for users to change the default colours should be maintained.
The expansion of At Risk highlighting in this way still wouldn't come close to the feature set of Power Markers but nonetheless it would be very useful.
What about the "four states" could be set to any period. E.g. in the project planning sw I use there is a concept of Ranges. There are predifined ranges of 7 days, 14 days, 90 days etc. Or you could set the range to any period you like.
Yes ideally you would have, say, four (or even five) states which could be set to any user-defined period as you suggest. I proposed making them the same as the Power Filter menu options more as an initial compromise which might be easier to set up as defaults as they are already incorporated into that menu, but if were possible to incorporate user-defined periods from the start that would be great.
