Hi Lena,

Sorry to hear this.  We liked the feature too, that is why we built it!  However our analysis and user feedback has told us that the feature has been confusing to users who do not understand why their tasks where being categorized into the "future" state without them putting it there.

Hope this makes sense.

This does not make any sense.

In order for them not to have the tasks be put into the future, all they had to do is not put in a future starting date.

Please, Please, Please put this back.  Who do I need to talk to?

I agree with Lena

This was the only way to keep the task lists a bit organised and easy to check

Now it's a big list with no order at all (or that i can see) and it's easy to miss tasks if you have a long tasks list

some tasks, due tomorrow  or next week are have the token "new task" or "top task" (no date) so all tasks need to be checked for dates to be sure its not for today or an ongoing task

sure you could use the due today list but that doesn't work for ongoing tasks or tasks that weren't finished on time...

The recurring tasks creates a lot of new tasks cluttering up the finished tasks list and you can't see the comments made before so that doesn't really work either

Basically without it the future task it becomes a big mess...

Or i'm not using your system correctly

maybe a bit of training to show people about the future task was a better option...

I hope you can put this feature back again!

Hi Lena and Lu,

Just want you to know that we hear your concerns.  We are determined to create a system that is
easy for everyone to stay organized with.  At the moment you are unfortunately a minority on this feature but we welcome feedback from the rest of the community.  In the meantime I will look into a feature that allows you to Sort your lists by task start date (currently you can Sort alphabetically, by priority and by due date).

Thanks for your understanding.

Add me to the 'minority' of users unhappy with this change.

Sorting a task list by start date doesn't solve the problem addressed by Future Tasks. If I have a task that doesn't start until next June, seeing it on my current task list for the next 8 months isn't helpful or even useful. It just makes a task list unwieldly.

Maybe instead of eliminating a useful function with no warning to users, you could make it a little more intuitive and/or tweakable. Perhaps up in that header full of dead space you could allow users to customize the date range of tasks they see, and provide them with a notification if their chosen date will move it to Future Tasks . That way, when a novice user enters a date of next month for a task, instead of it disappearing and leaving the user confused as to where it went, you'd be providing them a way to manage their output and expectations.

Sorry Ben looks like we are not giving up...

For me personally one of the things i liked best was seeing my tasklist get smaller and smaller each day/week.

But as a project manager setting up tasks for different people the future feature was the only way i could have some control over when they get to see a task while i can work in advance (becasue they don't check this tab)

And that's the main reason for using a tool like this rigth? So you can set up tasks in advance and dont have to think about them again until you have to..

Now it's just more complicated and time consuming!

A task that is started on Monday and due this Friday is looking the same right now as a task that isn't starting/due in a few weeks or months..

So this means you need to check the list every day  which is annoying and takes time

I think more people might agree with us, they might not find their way here though...

Maybe a new poll?

(sorry had to edit it because it looked strange with too much white space)

For me this particular incident highlights a bigger issue of whether I can use MJ Tasks as a "trusted system".
Unless this matter is resolved in a satisfactory manner (i.e. the modification made concerning starting dates gets reversed) I would conclude that I cannot.

For me to have a use something as a "trusted system" at least the following has to be in place:

1) They system would not go down for an extended period of time without notifications (which happened a few times recently)

2)  Existing essential functionality does not disappear without being replaced by something better performing a similar function.

There is no equivalency, in my opinion, between a commitment to existing users who benefit from the feature and trying to please new users who somehow find this optional functionality confusing.
It is optional!
If someone finds it confusing they can resolve it by training.
There is no such remedy for the users who incorporated that feature into their workflow.

This is ultimately about trust.

If this feature disappears today without any warning or acknowledgement how serious a matter it is, I cannot trust that another feature I use and get to rely upon will not disappear tomorrow.

3) I need better communication from MJ Tasks product team.

This is not the first time when a feature disappears quietly without notice.  This is unacceptable.  Every change should be announced explicitly.

That way the product team would feel reluctant messing with the product without appropriate accountability.
Every time the system goes down without a notice should go out to all users with an apology and explanation.
I wonder if the senior management in the organization is aware of all this tinkering and downtime...

4) I need a better idea of where this whole thing is going.

MJ purchased Co-Human more than two years ago!
We waited patiently to see how MJ chooses to integrate it with the existing product. It was understandable it would take some time.
The progress has been very disappointing and, more importantly, it is not clear what the plans are concerning future development.
It remains a half-baked products that I would never consider using on its own merits.  It is only my strong commitment to maps that justifies its use for me.

There is only so long you, guys, can run on client loyalty to the mapping product.

It's time MJ Tasks can stand on its own (or, at least, you communicate to the user community where you are taking the product and what is the timeline).

All in all, I am seriously considering giving up my deep commitment to the maps (that extends to my entire team of 7 people) unless someone very senior on the MJ management team helps me restore the trust that has been lost by the haphazard management of the MJ Tasks product.

Ben,

We tried to sort by due date but this doesn't work every time

you need to sort the tasks everytime you log in and then some will move but new tasks will stay at the bottom of the list..

This means you have to check the entire list everytime!
Tasks get missed because of this as they get lost in a big list

Ohh if there only was a simple feature to solve all this....

Can you please consider putting it back its not improving the system in anyway

BRING IT BACK!  We have many active boards (over 50) and when you removed the Future function all of our future tasks now distract us from our priorities.

We could create do, doing, done boards for every active project but then we would have 150 + boards.

Ben,
Just in case the comments we made the last 2 days don't trigger a notification in your system I'll add a new message

please check our comments to your last message and reconsider!

Ben,
Please update us on the status of this.  As you can see there are some of us who know how to use the future task feature and are very passionate about it.
Thank you.

Thank you all for your input.  It is great to have passionate users, and it is extremely helpful to know what they care about and why.  I will continue to gather data and user feedback on this topic.

In the meantime, I would love a chance to learn more about how you are using ProjectDirector and share some features ideas that may address your needs.  Please send me an email at ben.work@mindjet.com so we can continue these conversations.

Thank you in advance for your time, and your help.

hi Ben,

I've emailed you already

When we first started using the future tasks we had a problem with the tasks not showing up on time, so some tasks were "missing"

We noticed that the timezone in our settings was set to US Pacific automatically while we are in europe and asia..

easy fix..

Here is a clunky way around the future tasks problem for the time being.    You put a future start date on the task, then archive it.  When the date comes you will get an email notification (if you have them turned on) that the task is starting -- unfortunately it does not automatically activate the task.  You then click on the task from the email, then restart the task and it puts the task into the active task list..

Ben, Any possibility you can just allow archived tasks to automatically be put into the active list once the start date arrives?  This would serve the same function as future tasks.   However I still prefer to have Future Tasks back.

Thank you.

I guess more people are complaining now about the
missing future tasks as all tasks set for the next day now have the
future label...

We keep our recurring tasks inside the
archived tasks but until now the tasks for the coming days would
stand out a bit more (because these have dates and the others
don't)

If you use this system for yourself and only yourself
you can trust the dates but if you're the one setting up tasks for
team members having dates show for next few days made my job a lot
faster and easier

(then i could see in 1 glance if the tasks
were set up right now i have to scroll over each one to check the
date as the order by date feature doesn't work)

Mindjet isn't the same without the future tasks though, it's only getting more complicated with extra projects to cover the archived tab and these are easily missed and the extra checks every day just take up a lot of time.

When a MJ task has a future date and it is archived in MJ Tasks, it becomes read only task in the map and it cannot be changed in the map.  Please address this.  Or better yet, just bring back the Future Task which worked fine.  Thank you.

Big surprise yesterday as all of a sudden our archived tasks that were due that day were showing on the active list automatically..

tested it again today and it still works.

The only thing we did to make this happen is set both the start and due date for each task.

If you set up new tasks or reschedule them you still have to archive the tasks to keep them off the active list though

Thought it would share it here just in case you haven't noticed.

So it's almost like the future tasks used to be only a lot more complicated, especially if you set up tasks for other people.

Wish they would just put things back how it used to be and then i wouldn't mind changing my systems for the 5th time...
